Not financial advice. This is a general, educational comparison of features and published fees. It is not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any crypto asset. Crypto prices are volatile and you can lose money.

Worked examples at three sizes
Only fees with a published percentage can be calculated. The spread and Coinbase fee on a simple market buy vary and show on the preview.

|---|---|---|---|
| $100 | $1.00 + Coinbase fee if charged | $0.20 | $0.01 + network fee |

Staking, worked: the commission is a share of rewards, not of the amount staked. If a staked position earned $10 of rewards, the 35% standard commission would be $3.50 and you would keep $6.50. For eligible Coinbase One members on ADA, ATOM, DOT, ETH, SOL and XTZ, Coinbase lists 31.75% (Basic), 28.5% (Preferred) and 25.25% (Premium), which on the same $10 would be about $3.18, $2.85 or $2.53. We don't quote reward rates; Coinbase says the rate shown in your account is already after its commission.
How the order preview protects you
Coinbase says its preview shows the total you will pay, including spread and fees, and that the same detail is kept in your transaction history. To see the spread on a buy or sell, tap the tooltip next to the asset's price line. For conversions, tap the tooltip next to the exchange rate. Make this a habit: Coinbase also says fees may vary for similar transactions and that it tests fee and spread changes across regions, assets and order sizes.
The parts most reviews skip
DEX trading inside the app
Coinbase lets you trade on decentralized exchanges from the app. Coinbase says these trades carry the standard Coinbase fee plus a possible service fee, part of which may cover network fees; the quoted price is an estimate and the final price can move up to the slippage tolerance shown before you place the order. The service fee is not covered by Coinbase One. Coinbase also says DEX aggregators that route your trade may keep any price improvement as a fee. For a beginner, that is several moving parts, so read the price details carefully or stick to standard trades at first.
Instant unstaking
Unstaking is free if you wait out the network's unbonding period. If you want your assets back immediately, Coinbase charges an instant-unstake fee, disclosed when you request it. Decide before you stake whether you might need the funds quickly.
Coinbase Card
Spending with the Coinbase Card has no transaction fees, but Coinbase includes a spread when it sells your crypto to pay, and ATM operators may charge their own fees. The card is issued in the US by Pathward, N.A.
Crypto-backed loans
If you borrow USD from Coinbase and it has to sell your BTC collateral under the loan agreement, Coinbase charges a flat 2% of that transaction: $20 on a $1,000 sale.
Setting up Coinbase step by step
- Download the app from the official store or go to coinbase.com directly.
- Create an account with a unique password and turn on the strongest two-step verification the app offers.
- Verify your identity in the app.
- Add a payment method and check whether it shows a fee before you confirm a deposit.
- Start a small simple buy and open the preview. Tap the price tooltip to see the spread.
- If you later want order-book pricing, look at Coinbase Advanced, which has no spread. Learn limit and market orders before using it.
- Before sending crypto out, check the estimated network fee on the send screen. If you are moving to a hardware wallet, see hot vs cold wallets.
Pros, cons and catches
Coinbase
Pros
- The more complete public fee disclosure of the two exchanges we compare.
- Free internal transfers between Coinbase users.
- States that it has no payment-for-order-flow relationships.
- Advanced screen with no spread in the same account.
Cons
- Simple buys have no single published fee percentage.
- Simple limit orders cost 1% plus a possible Coinbase fee, which is high next to the no-spread Advanced option.
- The 35% standard staking commission takes a large share of rewards.
Catches
- Coinbase One zero-fee trading excludes the 1% limit-order fee and DEX service fees, and a spread may still apply.
- Coinbase notes the fees disclosed are not applicable in all regions.
- Instant unstaking has a fee; waiting the unbonding period avoids it.
Who it's for, and who it isn't
Good fit: beginners who read the fine print, want everything in one app, and may grow into an order book. Poor fit: anyone who wants to place frequent simple limit orders, or who wants a flat card-funding rate published in advance. For that comparison see Coinbase vs Crypto.com and the fee table.

How we checked
On October 15, 2026 we re-read each official page listed under Sources and copied only the numbers and rules stated there. Worked examples are simple arithmetic on those published rates; where a fee is variable (spreads, admin fees, network fees), we say it shows on the order preview instead of guessing. Anything we could not confirm is left out or marked "Not published". We did not open accounts or place trades for this guide, and nothing here is investment advice.
